Tentative information on the combined AOE, ME, and ECE graduate controls curriculum
The graduate controls curricula in AOE, ME, and ECE are in the process of being updated and combined into a single high-quality core curriculum that is cross-listed among the three departments. Once the curriculum is in place, any student in any of the three departments can receive in-department credit for these of the courses. The curriculum changes have been approved by the departments and the college, and they will be reviewed by the university-level curriculum committee during the Fall 2009 semester. In addition to the core courses listed below, each department will continue to offer a variety of special topics courses that are open to students in any department.
The new curriculum contains two parallel tracks for both linear systems and linear controls. The two parallel tracks target students with different academic goals. For those students who anticipate using control theory in their research, we offer Linear Systems Theory and Linear Control Theory. For students who need to apply control systems concepts, but do not need access to fundamental theory, we offer Applied Linear Systems and Applied Linear Control. In addition, we offer Nonlinear Systems Theory and Adaptive Control Systems in the graduate core curriculum. To learn more about the core courses, please follow links to the proposed syllabi in the table below .
Formal cross-listing and new course numbers are not yet available for fall 2009. Students wishing to take Linear Systems Theory should sign up for ECE 5704. Students wishing to take Applied Linear Systems should sign up for ME 5505. Students wishing to take Nonlinear Systems Theory should sign up for AOE 5334. If these courses are not in your department, then you will not receive in-department credit. This will not be a problem for most students since a plan of study allows a few courses to be outside of the student's department. If there is a critical issue, please see your academic advisor.
